The birth place of Karl Drais (Draising walking bicycle) is today a city of 300,000 people and home to one of Germany's leading technical universities, the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, linked to many great figures of the automobile industry (among many others): Karl Benz (inventor of the automobile) , Miroslav von Skoda, August Thyssen, Franz Fehrenbach (CEO of Bosch), Stefan Quandt (BMW heir), Dieter Zetsche (CEO of Daimler AG), ... but over the past 20 years Karlsruhe has made remarkable progress in promoting cycling.

As part of the programme to turn Karlsruhe into a "Fahrradstadt", the city took cars off Erbprinzenstraße to build the car-free cycling route "Cityroute south" just north of the busy "Kriegsstraße".
