Gallery: No Entry - except cycles

Places where cyclists are allowed to ride both ways in streets that are otherwise one-way for motor vehicles.

In the Netherlands these are uitgezonderd - exceptions for cyclists, in Germany a drawing of a bicycle is followed by the word "frei" (free).

In Britain the Department for Transport currently (and annoyingly) does not permit an "Except Cycles" panel underneath a no entry sign. Mawson Road in Cambridge is now a trial site for this new type of sign. In the meantime, various local authorities have got around this ruling by having a blue cycleway symbol next to or underneath the no entry sign. But where that is done there is normally and island separating the lane.

In Cambridge the preferred method seems to be use of the No Motor Vehicles sign (aka low flying motorbike sign) - which does not require an island.

In a study on lifting the ban on cycling in Cambridge a survey found that in Trinity Street and St John's Street no injury collisions were reported to cyclist going against the flow compared to 6 collisions of with-flow cyclists. So, like the advice given to walkers on country roads, it seems to be safer to ride facing oncoming traffic.

A UK first? An officially-sanctioned 'No Entry Except Cycles' sign!

Road closure with cycle bypasses, Camden.

Looking into Westgate Street. I think this means No Entry to cyclists between 10:30 am and 4:30 pm, and No Entry to other vehicles at any time.

Crown junction short contraflow cycle past no entry signs Location: , Inverness (Scotland, United Kingdom)

New contraflow cycle lane on Great Queen Street, London, with No Entry signs without an exemption for cyclists!

The no entry versus contraflow cycle lanes here are very ambiguous.

Entrance to contraflow cycle lane: a no-entry sign with 'cycle lane' added. Basically a non DfT compliant 'no entry except cycles'.

No entry except cycles AND Pedestrian priority! We need both of these in Cambridge!

Can't remember exactly where in this part of Amsterdam this photo of a No cycling exception sign was taken.

An illegal 'Except Cyclists' sign? These were removed and the one-way scheme abandoned within a few months of it starting.

The entrance to Malcolm Street viewed from the other side of Jesus Lane. It shows the absence of any island dividing the contraflow one way cyclists and motorists coming out of the street.

Exception to one-way street for cyclists and powered two wheelers.

The "Except Cycles" actually applies to the "No right turn" that is on the opposite side of this sign!

Note the small blue sign that allows bikes to legally pass to the right of this bollard. Its very unusual, but it does work. Note: a cycling campaign leisurely ride was stopped by Police going through this gap in March 2006. The ride lea ... [more]

Rising bollards, Silver Street, eastbound. Single 'No entry' sign ('Except authorised vehicles') on the central reservation; 'Cycles only' and 'Keep right' signs to the left of the cycle bypass.

Rising bollards, Bridge Street, southbound. Single 'No entry' signs ('Except pedal cycles and authorised buses and taxis') on the approach; single 'No entry' sign ('Except authorised buses and taxis') on the central reservation; 'Cycle lane ... [more]

Rising bollards. Southbound approach at Emmanuel Road. Pair of 'No entry' signs ('Except pedal cycles & authorised buses & taxis').

Sign pollution - what a horrible mess this is! Notice the No Entry - with Cyclists Exception which would not be permitted if this was the Highway.

Looking towards Hobson Street from King Street. This is one of the most explicit examples of a cycle route going directly between two No Entry signs. The absence of a "cyclists exception " panel underneath the No Entry signs here co ... [more]

'No entry except cycles - pedestrian priority' - signage we're not allowed in Cambridge?

No entry sign with "bicycles free" sign underneath. Centre of Nuremberg / Nürnberg, between "Neues Museum" and the main train station.

Signing of a cycle contraflow on a one way street at Upper Ground

Cycle bypass lane for a cycle contraflow on a one way street at Lambs Conduit in London

Pedestrianised area in old Geneva. A no entry sign excepting cycles reads "Cycles exceptés".

No entry - "bicycles" frei / free. This one way street (for motor traffic) is typical in its car parking layout, which are located in blocks on either side, so that cars have to slow down and "slalom" between them.

No entry sign with a "bicycle road" sign underneath. Bicycles have priority both ways, local motor traffic is allowed, but only in one direction.

The No Entry sign at the north end of Corn Exchance Street has gained a Cycle Route sign. I suspect this is an attempt at producing "No Entry Except Cycles". Ed: the blue sign is known as diagram 967, see #73568.

Cycle contraflow leading to the Redruth Tesco.

A recently installed (ie in 2008) contraflow cycle lane in Bury St Edmunds leading to a short section of shared space. I thought the size of the traffic island was interesting.

If Bury St Edmunds doesn't feel the need for an island, even when there is oodles of room for one, why does Cambridge?

If Bury St Edmunds doesn't feel the need for an island, even when there is oodles of room for one, why does Cambridge?

Here's another example of no entry except cycles. I'm not sure of the exact location but its near the Fallowfield Loop railway line in Manchester.

Bike Symbol at entry to Bus & Bike only Street, Vine Street, Uxbridge

Off the public highway I believe. Another exception plate to add to the collection.

Amazing! Someone has stopped to unload on Bateman Street without blocking the contraflow cycle lane.

Don't tell DfT. The use of the "except" cycles plate with a "no entry" sign is clear, unambiguous, widely used in Europe, but not allowed by DfT.

Another way of signing a cycle exemption to a No Entry

No Entry - except trams [but cyclists can cross the tram lines to the right]

Cambridgeshire County Council does not permit the use of this sign. Erected by ... Cambridgeshire County Council

Supposedly unlawful "Except cycles" plate. Copied from with permission.
